I would suggest trying again, as I tried with both drush and the tarball, and PHP 5.3.20 and PHP 5.4.10, and all worked fine.

With that said, just be aware that Commons isn't 100% compatible with PHP 5.4.

I think it might be to do with install commons via the GUI (/install.php). I tried about 5 times using a fresh build and every time but it gets to the installing of the commons module at the end (point 130 I think) and hangs. I was using php 5.3 on ubuntu. I then tried doing the same thing via drush and it installed easily
