What theme are you using, it sounds like you are using a responsive theme and want a fixed theme.
That seems the case...
Been trying to learn drupal on the fly... Is there any way to transfer a responsive to fixed theme or am I gonna be looking for a fixed theme and starting all over? I did not pick up on the "Responsive" aspect when I chose the theme.

I have not used that theme, but the project page lists "Fixed Width" suggesting there is an option/setting for the theme that will do what you want. If you can locate such an option you might post in the issue queue for the theme.
