Media Field Type File Structure

Is it possible to add a add a file structure to how items are filed in the media library for use again? As I start adding images, files, etc. I can see that there will likely be thousands of entries before our site is finished. It was facilitate their reuse. I notice that mine aren't even sorted alphabetical. Is that possible? if so how?
