Problem/Motivation

@larowlan posted a simplified patch for #1801268: Change link field 'title' field to 'link text' but this leaves a few unresolved issues that should be fixed.

Proposed resolution

Variables should be renamed, renderable link arrays need to be fixed, upgrade paths addressed, etc. As @falcon03 says 'I still think that having "link text" assigned to a $title or $link_title variable is really confusing from a novice developer point of view.'

So if we can reduce the confusion in D8, great!

Remaining tasks

The above mentioned tasks need to be assigned to a contributor.

The issue summary needs more specifics in order to make any change to the code, such as

What variables should be renamed and what is the suggested new name?
What needs to be fixed with the renderable link arrays?
What is the problem with the upgrade path that needs to be fixed?

There has been no discussion here for 8 years so I wonder what if any of these items have been addressed. Can anyone check that?

Drupal core is moving towards using a “main” branch. As an interim step, a new 11.x branch has been opened, as Drupal.org infrastructure cannot currently fully support a branch named main.
