Errors when trying to get 7.x-5.x installed

I'm really looking involved in getting #503228: All questions in a single page moved forward however I can't even get 7.x-5.x set up on my system.

I am currently using 7.x-4.0-alpha12 and am trying to upgrade but get a whole slew of errors both in the migration process and code base:

When accessing a quiz:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ')' in .../sites/all/modules/quiz/question_types/multichoice/multichoice.classes.inc on line 876

or

When trying to run the update script

Fatal error: Call to undefined function drupal_install_modules() in .../sites/all/modules/quiz/question_types/multichoice/multichoice.install on line 236

So I know the upgrade path from 4alpha might not be supported.. but I tried this on a clean install and got this error

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_SL in .../sites/all/modules/quiz/includes/views/quiz.views_default.inc on line 10
