Add Entity To Group not working as expected: Can't use node ID as group

Upon group creation (saving a new content type of group), I create a new entity (a term), apply a parent to it, then force save it. Now I need to add it to a group (the group just created), but I can't use node:nid to identify the group. Am I missing something?
