Is a simple field at at the contact form enough? Where should that customer number be used? You can add order numbers to the activities. Or do you need a specific number, that is also displayed at the invoice?

i think the customer number could be the number of the contact you add. you could then print that. a field could be added here.

You could also use the serial field module and just add it to your customer node. That should so the trick. Then add the field to the panel and thats it.
