Is it possible to use a subdomain to upgrade a drupal site?

I have a Drupal 6 site - example.com

Is it possible to install Drupal 7 on a subdomain - subdomain.example.com - for the purpose of migrating the site in parts?

Currently the D6 site has three main sections that can be split apart: e-commerce (Ubercart), a blog (CCK, filefield, imagefield, etc), and media galleries (again CCK, imagefield, etc).

All of my D7 sites currently use Drupal Commerce, so I would like to convert this store from Ubercart to Drupal Commerce during the upgrade from D6 to D7.

Can I setup a completely different installation of Drupal under the subdomain (store.example.com) or does it need to be a separate domain?
