It's possible to place a field collection field inside itself on the manage fields page using the "existing fields" select (/admin/structure/field-collections/field-[fieldname]/fields). As there is no real benefit from doing so this should be considered a bug.

There are possible benefits for doing this. It could be used to represent tree structured data with some extra data at each graph node.
