I have a forum setup on my site but I've found that anonymous users can't see any replies to messages. Logged in users can see replies without any problems.

Is this a config/install problem or is it by design? Either way, how can I let anonymous users see replies?

In case it matters, I had ACL and Content Access modules installed but I've now disabled them. I've cleared down the cache just in case the page was cached but that hasn't helped.

Did you give the access comments permission to the anonymous user role?

Glad someone else ran into this - two years ago - and the answer was here. But, yet again, this is about the 127th Drupal setting that was completely non-intuitive, unless, I guess, you've been been working with Drupal since its inception and "well, of course you have to enable to general 'access comments' option for anonymous user roles so that anyone reading your forum can see the responses to initial posting of topics - DUH!" I guess since I've turned off comments for all my primary content, and are only letting users post stuff on the forum, I was perplex at how there wasn't ANYTHING in the settings for the Forum itself about enabling users to actually READ the damn comments. Sorry about my ignorance, grovel, grovel, grovel....

Yes, this can be a challenge. The D6 version now lists all the required permissions and how they work together, D5 is rapidly declining...
