Because sorry guys, I don't feel the documentation is clear enough. The module is obviously very powerful, but between here, the blog and the heartbeat test site, there are a lot of nice things displayed but not a lot of explanation on how it's done. I tried the screencast just now and have come away without what I need from it, so I think the best place to come next is here. I'm stuck and frustrated, because every module I've come across so far (in about two years working with Drupal) offers immediate success or an in-depth explanation on how it works. I accept this is going to sound rude, but I'm not getting either of those from Heartbeat and that bothers me.

I need to ask where to find a step-by-step guide on how to set up a stream for a specific content type, how to use the integrated Rules options (with specifics such as understanding the difference between the user id and the user target id, and in which contexts I should use one over the other) as well as the best way to output them. My public heartbeat actually works fine (doing what I need it to, at least), but none of the ways of outputting them seem to. Both the Display Suite and Views are outputting nothing. I need to understand why this is (after having placed everything in valid regions and outputting them as blocks). I will work out the advanced stuff later (such as user-specific activity, groups and relationships) but for now, the basics are evading me and I've spent too much time trying to get past that.

Thanks all,

Kris

And there we go, the first issue has been cleared up. Heartbeat wasn't playing properly with Views 3, it took a lot of searching to get it to work.

Things like this need to be explained somewhere in the documentation.

I've made the decision to use Views and just spit out the individual activity types in to separate blocks.

Will close this, I think.
