Support for Drupal 7 is ending on 5 January 2025—it’s time to migrate to Drupal 10! Learn about the many benefits of Drupal 10 and find migration tools in our resource center.
Not sure if you want to change it since Drupalish people with Panels experience will know what it is, but to most normal humans, the tab "Panelizer" is going to make absolutely zero sense.
I would re-title it something like "Custom pages" or something, personally.

rosemeria CreditAttribution: rosemeria commentedThe very smart people that created Display Suite use "Manage display" for the tab. This is a very clear description and I am all for copying from smart people!
Topcheese CreditAttribution: Topcheese commentedNow that just hurts :). "Manage display" is also a good one, but I guess it wouldn't hurt either to perhaps "dumb" it down and make it shorter if possible? Feedback can benefit even smart people from time to time if it's something new.

rosemeria CreditAttribution: rosemeria commentedDear Topcheese,
I'm sorry, I didn't mean that your options were not good - it's just that... I am not very smart and it would best to use a term that I am already familiar with!

Topcheese CreditAttribution: Topcheese commentedHi rosemeria, I had hoped you didn't think I took it personally, so I threw in the smiley face for good measure. My response was meant to be towards the issue and not you. Smart people designed it, less than smart people need to grasp it. If I'm not mistaken, "Manage display" is Drupal speak, and not really all that universal.
Thank you very much for your concern, and I wouldn't worry about offending my smarts, because Drupal has already done it. Love it!
Edit: rosemeria, you are very humble. You have been working with Drupal much longer than I have, and I think Drupal's possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread, so you are indeed very smart. If a person is not smart now, they will surely become smarter through the open-source process and Drupal.
I was thinking more along the lines of screen real estate, wouldn't one word be better than two?

ezra-g CreditAttribution: ezra-g commentedIt's probably best to avoid using the same label for something different. How about "customize page" or similar?

Topcheese CreditAttribution: Topcheese commentedYes, "Customize Page" sounds good to me, but I think you hit it with just "Customize" as it fits more with a mobile layout if you intend to go that route with it. Really, what I'm stuck on is how lonely the Edit tab looks feeling left out telling me I got your "Customize Page" here buddy!
Usually when I need to customize something I edit it, maybe it's just me, but why do I feel like I'm stepping out on the edit page when I go the the "Customize Page" tab? Is there a reason for the disconnect by having an extra tab? I can kind of see it named "Panelizer" because I know what it is.
If you are going to have the tab then I would go with just "Panel." It's short, it helps with keeping that distinction with edit tab, etc. If you going to call it "Customize," or anything similar, perhaps you should be able to click on just the edit tab and then have a pop-up with something like "Edit Panel? or Edit Page?"

ezra-g CreditAttribution: ezra-g commented"Customize page" sounded familiar to me.
As it turns out, that's because "Customize this page" is the text on the IPE. It seems like our first course of action would be to switch Panelized entities to using the IPE. However, that still leaves us with a Panelizer tab that provides settings on a per-display mode basis.
It seems like the action items here are:
- Switch to IPE for all entities
- Conditionally hide the Panelizer tab from users who don't need to see it in a way that folks who *do* want to see it can still do so.

ezra-g CreditAttribution: ezra-g commentedSince this makes sense for all sites running Panelizer, I'm moving it into the Panelizer issue queue.
DamienMcKennaOn a site I built with Panelizer v1 I renamed the tab to "Customize layout", but with Panelizer v3 it opens a popup with links rather than the content display editor.
From a usability perspective this *definitely* needs to be renamed.

merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedHonestly, I've struggled to find something I consider descriptive while also not conflicting with other modules' ideas of customizing an entity. It's not easy if you want to be inclusive.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedAhh, that same check needs to also go in the entity view alter. I should've checked that one too. :(This patch should fix it. Can you verify it for me?EDIT: Wrong issue. Ignore.
DamienMcKenna@merlinofchaos: Wrong issue?

xaa CreditAttribution: xaa commentedI am agree. From the client side "panelizer" means nothing.
Maybe keep panelizer by default and provide a new field in the settings page to customize it if required. By doing this no worry to find the perfect term.
mglamanWe do not expose Panelizer except through the IPE, but explaining Panelizer as a term to our implementation team is difficult.
I think "Customize display" is appropriate. This covers the "page" terminology and view mode. IPE says page, which makes sense because its when viewing that page. Customize display makes sense when modifying view modes.
Edit: apparently my phone autocorrects Panelizer to Panelized.
Edit 2: After reading #2157701: UX: Use of word "panel" is confusing when referring to each Panelizer display I think "Customize display" would be proper. If a person is using something like Display Suite or something that may bring up terminology conflict, I believe there's a bigger architecture issue on that person's hand versus the terminology.
DamienMcKennaI concur on "customize display", though I'm concerned about the string length.
Thoughts?
DamienMcKennaHow about this? It adds a short message on the Overview that says "Changes made here will override the default Panelizer displays."
DamienMcKennaThis version also updates the vertical tab in the entity form.
mglamanI dig! I'm not concerned about the string length. Yes, it is longer than normal, but honestly Drupal is deplorable with user experience and people understanding what it is they might be doing before doing it.
I can give this a test run this weekend!
DamienMcKenna@mglaman: Did you get to try it yet? Any thoughts?
DamienMcKennaA small update to the message added to the overview page.
