The modules makes calls to taxonomy API (taxonomy_get_vocabularies()) but doesn't have it as dependency. That may result in installation issues when a module depends on both similarterms and taxonomy, but similarterms are located above taxonomy modules in the dependency list (dependencies[] entries of .info file).

The patch (rolled against d0f10f5fdcb3a16855cff93094c4139a32e585f6 but this shouldn't be a problem for others since info file changes rarely).
