In discussions of #1539940: Encourage best practices in /sites/README.txt, /modules/README.txt, /profiles/README.txt and /themes/README.txt, we noticed some inconsistency in how translations are handled (no top-level directory, like there is for modules, themes, and profiles now).
So I took a look at the documentation we have, and I found:
core/INSTALL.txt instructions for translation:
- Download a translation file for the correct Drupal version and language
from the translation server: http://localize.drupal.org/translate/downloads
- Place the file into the dedicated translations directory. By default this
directory is:
sites/default/files/translations/
and then it says to see http://drupal.org/localize for details.
But that page says:
You will find a directory named translations inside the directory of the profile you will be using. Normally you use standard profile so you can use profiles/standard/translations. Move the downloaded .po file inside this folder.
Which is correct? I'm assuming the d.o page is probably correct, and therefore we should fix the INSTALL.txt (probably in both d7 and d8)?

BerdirI think INSTALL.txt is correct, but this is new in 8.x AFAIK, so the doc page might be correct too, for the current stable version :)

jhodgdonAh, OK. Yes the 7.x INSTALL file agrees with the d.o page -- sorry I should have checked that.
So should the INSTALL.txt file in d8 say something about how to change the default place for translations?
