It'd be really nice if, after I press tilde, it would save my preference for hiding/showing the menu. So, for example, if I'm working on some admin tasks and want to keep it open for a while, I just hit tilde once, and it would stay open on all future pageloads. Then, when I'm done with those tasks, I hit tilde again and it would hide on all future pageloads.
This could be saved either via a cookie or a user variable (perhaps via integration with the user_variable module).
Are you open to co-maintainers? If so, I'd be happy to help.

emcniece CreditAttribution: emcniece commentedI would also be interested in this feature. My site is currently experiencing some "memory loss" issues in that on page refresh the admin bar seems to randomly show/hide itself, and the class that it adds to the body (.adm_menu_hidden) isn't synchronized with the menu itself. A minor annoyance, but a cookie or variable check system would probably solve the issue.
