The front page of Drupal.org currently says there are nearly 18,000 modules available for Drupal. That's not true, because it includes obsolete modules (that exist for 5.x and nothing later). It might also count modules multiple times if they exist for several Drupal versions, or use other questionable counting methods -- I don't know.
It's important to fix this because the lie is repeated throughout the Drupal community, undermining the reputation of all our statements.
At the very least, we need a statement that documents how we arrive at that number. Ideally, the counting method should be adjusted to include only (a) one count of (b) modules for currently supported versions of Drupal.
(There might be similar issues with how we count themes, distributions, and developers. We can deal with those in separate issues.)
(Hey, check out that screen shot! 19,999 developers! :) )

DSquaredB CreditAttribution: DSquaredB commentedThose numbers can be misleading. If you click on the Modules link on the front page (which currently says 26,000+), the Download & Extend page defaults to show just the full projects (currently @15,000).
Maybe some explanation or footnote is needed.

mgiffordMaybe modules/themes that don't have a release on a currently supported version or dev version of core should just be archived. They shouldn't count in these numbers, but the also should be bumped down on any search results too (both internal & with xmlsitemap).
Having unmaintained projects reflected on d.o doesn't help. I had thought there was a related issue about that but can't find it.

drummThe front page no longer has a count of modules.
