would be nice if when you select this feature, make a reference to the file currently does nothing if checked.
When you attach a file to a field, you can have these features when you see the node, or when lists with views. but when it references, these features do not work.

ericras CreditAttribution: ericras commentedI think I have the same issue. File references do not display.
On admin/structure/types/manage/book/fields/field_file_reference/field-settings I choose a Target Type of "File". Then I create a page, choosing a file to reference, save, and no matter what I have selected for my (File) Entity Reference field on Manage Display, my rendered web page displays nothing for this field.

ericras CreditAttribution: ericras commentedHere's some screens. I'm adding two Entity Reference fields to my content type. One is a File reference, one is a Node reference. The Node reference displays on the rendered page just fine, the File one does not display at all.
