I just set up a site with social networking capabilities (see signature). I would start with buddylist, obviously. Then I customized the user profile a lot in phptemplate and added some custom blocks. That's all I used for the social networking aspect, actually! I didn't bother with usernode or bio or anything. I didn't have much luck with invite. It just seems buggy right now. I have to check what the problems were, and maybe submit a bug report. I'm waiting for that module to mature a little. I'm thinking of adding private message, but I have to check if there's a way to block people and set messaging permissions, i.e. "only buddies can message me" vs. "everyone can message me". IMO, anytime you allow users to message each other, it's essential to allow them to block each other as well.

So, we're talking customized code for a social networking profile like you would find on an SNS I'm guessing.

Kind of. I did it all (well most of it) from within the theme. If you're interested in some snippets, I can post.

Invite is ok, and it is great together with buddylist
events are great for users too

Really great is if users can can have nice profiles with photos and lot of informations
(usernode, node profile, cck)
