1. Drupal bug : It's possible to create alias with only a space after unselect the checkbox "automatic alias"

Path, with no control, inserts in the table url_alias a "dest" with one space.

Path execute a request with a false result

Then it's impossible to create another alias.

Once you unselect the Pathauto checkbox, that bug is Drupal core's problem with it's code. Unless you can confirm the problem happens without Pathauto enabled.
