if a profile 'becomes' a node does that mean that I could write a module to check if user A is a buddy (budylist module) of user B. If so, user A will be granted permission to see user B's profile - a node in this case?

yes.

yep.

I thought to get to this goal this way:

1. implement an action that controls node access of all nodes of configurable types of a user, perhaps on top of the acl module
2. implement workflow-ng support for buddylist, which is in progress (http://groups.drupal.org/node/5233)

then, you could configure the action to grant access as soon as a connection is initiated

fago - that sounds nice...I think configurable user privacy and node access would lift buddylist module to a new level.
I'll have a look at workflow-ng...i'm still a newbie to drupal programming so i'm in for a lot of learning...
stuff sounds interesting - I will keep an eye on it!
thanks

fago - a quick question. What module needs ACL module?
I saw that ACL isn't to be used on its own. I want to see it 'in action' next to some other module.
thanks

the content_access and the forum access module

The content access module uses it to provide fine-grained access control. The forum access uses it to provide forum moderators, however I don't know much about forum access. It's not so well used / tested I think.

In my experience forum_access works great for forums.

If it were up to me, I would close this as "fixed" (since it's a support request) because having nodes as profiles via nodeprofile allows you to use any of the existing node privacy modules to achieve the desired level of privacy.
