From Dharmesh's post at https://www.acquia.com/blog/journey-build-better-drupal-toolbar, which includes UX testing data:

Toolbar, v2. Reorganizes IA into Content, People, and Site, then uses action words Add, Manage, and List, below

You can see a prototype in action at http://screencast.com/t/2CyrTMCUzh. I'm in the process of tracking down where the code for this prototype lives, but my understanding is it was very quickly thrown together and is not remotely in a state of being ready. :)

Here's the module. Be it known I have never even looked at this code. I accept no responsibility or blame. :)

Cross referencing #1137920: Fix toolbar on small screen sizes and redesign toolbar for desktop. That issue wants to remove a bunch of stuff from the toolbar for mobile devices. This issue wants to add a bunch of stuff for desktop UX. How to reconcile?

I'm coming from the issue Alex linked. I really like those screenshots, and I was curious about the code. For those opposed to tarballs, here's a patch as though it were being added to spark. Also an interdiff for the parts I cleaned up.

Can we have this as a separate d.o project please?

Second that.

This type of usability should really be added to the admin menu module or used in its own module.

Go for it! The Spark team doesn't currently have plans to implement this, at least in the near future.

Hm,
just showing up for a quick look and feedback.

The problem with horizontal menu display is always the uncertainty about the number and length of items that are visible on one level.
E.g., I co-maintain one D6 site which has around 40 content types. And the staff can see all of them.

Probably the solution proposed is great for a number of sites, and/or a number of user roles on those sites. Maybe this is even the majority. We just need to keep in mind that we need a "fallback" for longer menus. Linebreak?

Or, more general, we need to design a home that is equally comfortable for a mouse and an elephant :)
Or a way to choose (manually or automatically) between different homes, depending on the animal.

if someone creates issues or projects for this new administrative menu bar please link them here.

Feedback:
the issue of the long list of content types seems to naturally be solved with a select box that is able hide the complexity of numerous content types. Custom styles to enlargen and stylize the appears of the select box could make the appearance of such a field blend with the overall style of the bar.

This looks awesome, has nobody implemented this yet?

Edit: I've created a sandbox here.

We have actually decided to do a different implementation, based a lot on Lewis Nyman's prototyping work instead: http://drupal.org/project/navbar

I believe that makes this issue "Won't fix" for Spark, but that's awesome that you've created a sandbox! Moving this issue over there.

@webchick, I'm curious, are these prototypes available anywhere? Quick google search came up empty...

Thanks!

@alexweber Here is a public link to the prototype we are working on for mobile administration. There's also a blog post by Dries about this progress. All of this is very much in flux and changing rapidly -- we would love to hear your thoughts.
