possible to customize the addthis counter button?

I can customize it in the preview section in the "edit" section for the widget (using the "settings" option in the button/counter interface directly). But I can't get it to show those customizations when the addthis counter appears on the site. I've tried setting up a profile on addthis.com and linking the profile, but I can't find any settings at addthis.com that would let me make the settings changes there and then get pulled by the module. Is it just not possible to customize at this point (it seems to also be an issue with the AddThis drupal module) or am I missing something (or is there a way in the code)?
