Are spaces really not permitted in directory names?

My folder is not a valid directory name. It should contain only alphanumeric characters, hyphen and underscore.

Might it be possible to support them? Would they play nicely?

I'm curious about why spaces ain't allowed. Here is a quick patch which adds spaces support.
