Personally I find user pictures severely lacking compared to image fields - particularly when it comes to setting the image style to use.

As such, I almost always use an image field on the user profile instead of user pictures.

It would be great if you could select an image field to use gravatar with as well.

As a bonus this would mean support for modules like profile2 (though I don't use that one myself).

Apart from that, using an image field will allow:

1) muuuuch better UX for uploading/deleting the user-submitted avatar, thanks to the upload/remove button
2) uploading the avatar at registration

so, +1 :)
