This seemed to have been fixed in the 6.x version, but I'm using the 7.x-1.0-rc3 version, and abstracts, for example, are not visible to the core search engine. Is there something that can be done to address that?

Yep, I just committed what should be the fix for that.

Look for it in the next build of the -dev version.
