Media gallery and taxonomy [#1405766]

I would like to use the media gallery to show images in different categories. The problem is: I do not see how to include subcategories and yet my images include several levels of them.
How does one create subcategories, since after creating a category, you only seem to have the possibility to Add Media?

I also thought I could use the taxonomy method, but there's no gallery as an existing term & if you create one, how do you connect it to the gallery itself?
On the Gallery content page options (manage display), there is the "Gallery collection", which I set to be visible, "Above", but it does not appear on the content creation page.
What is this for & how do you use it?

Anyway, how do you create categories & subcategories?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Surely there is someone who at least knows if or how one can use the media gallery with the taxonomy module.
I would be grateful to know & if it is not possible I would move on to look for another solution, which I urgently need.

You can use the taxonomy with the gallery-nodes. By default, this feature is hidden. Have a look into #1037002: New feature: Gallery containers. Is that, what you are searching?
