I have a site that is nearly complete in 5.1, however, I am unable to implement two of the main features due to the relevant modules not having been updated yet to 5.1 (and I'm not sure when it's going to happen). The two modules being Side Content (http://drupal.org/project/sidecontent) and Autoresponder (http://drupal.org/project/autoresponder).
Is it possible to move back to 4.7 but keep the existing database, or is the database specific to 5?

databases differ - downgrade not possible
The database for drupal 5 differs from drupal 4.7 in several important places - you cannot go back to 4.7 from there (It is technically possible but if you knew what to change in the database you would not have asked if it were possible, and starting over with a 4.7 site would be easier anyway)
You might try to help the module maintainer to upgrade the modules you need to 5.x - and then everyone wins.
