It would be nice if the Email settings field was exposed to the field API through the hook_field_extra_fields() option, so it becomes available in the list in the Manage fields tab (admin/config/people/accounts/fields) and can be easily positioned to other fields in the user profile.

A good example of how this can be done is in the i18n project, method i18n_node_field_extra_fields().
