AFAIK, I do not see any table added width value in Drupal core. But it's worth to do so and I try to break the rules :)

see attached images, it is content manage page. after adding width value, more charming I think.

TITLE is the important column at this section, should be the large one.
AUTHOR and other column should not take a lot of space.

These columns automatically adjust based on the width of the content in the table cells. Some sites might have long values for usernames, so automatic adjustment is better.
