first one to report :-)
If you have just one value in the "Selected Options"-Box and you remove this from the box and fire submit (via normal hook_form_submit) the value stays in the form_state variable. If the are more than one options, the one you "clicked away" is no longer in the form_state.

did you ever find an answer for this behavior? I'm struggling with this now and can't seem to figure where this is happening.

Sorry, we had no solution. So we donot use the module anymore...
