Not asking you guys to do this, but given your superior knowledge of Features, I'm wondering if you know whether it would even be possible to backport this to D6 and how much work might be involved. Right now we're inserting sample content in our install profile, but it'd make things easier if we could use something like this with a feature to do it.

I'd LOVE an answer to this one as well. This would have saved me a ton of trouble (I had to do the same install profile stuff).

Sorry, no. This module is deprecated in favor of UUID Features Integration, a more flexible alternative. Check #1869366: Future Plan for more details.
