ensure exceptions are only thrown when calling value()

Some metadata related methods try to retrieve metadata from the data values. For that they call value() what might lead to exceptions. However retrieving metadata should be safe, i.e. not throw an exception. Attached patch fixes the wrapper to catch the exceptions thrown by value() and improves the docs for value() in regard to exceptions.
