Though the title may say it all, see #1229898: [Rooms] Possible integration of availability_calendars and rooms for a more detailed description of the question at hand. To read more about the features of Rooms see: http://www.istos.it/blog/drupal-rooms/an-update-on-drupal-rooms.

In this issue I want reactions from current Availability Calendars users about:

  • Any opposition in general against integrating?
  • What features are essential for you?

Please note that Rooms is a D7 only solution. So the D6 version of availability calendars will not be touched by this and will continue to exist. Regardless the outcome of this discussion, the current D7 version will remain for a long time to come, but may turn into a bug fix only status.

I was experimenting with a project of my own that uses the availability calender module. It's a site that will let people rent out their own accommodations through one site. So the site is a collection of different accommodations added by different people. It uses availability calender to allow the user to show the availability of their accommodation. The thing I love about availability calender is the ease you can change the availability now. You can use the flexibility of content types and add a calender below it. I haven't checked out the rooms dev yet but the prospects look promising. If there is a chance you can integrate it with drupal rooms I would applaud it. A feature that I would love the new module to have, as the drupal rooms module I think only focusses on hotels and villa's etc, is to allow showing availability for an entire accommodation in one area. Excluding renting out individual rooms. And perhaps a booking form you can use to make renting request toward the owner of the particular accommodation.

I will most definitely keep an eye out for the future development.

I'm sorry if I've made any grammar mistakes. English is not my first language.

Good luck to you!

I just finished watching the drupal rooms alpha demo. It has some nice features. But as I thought, you can't attach availability and search to a custom content type. With availability calenders you are able to do that. That way it's possible to allow different users to manage availability for their own accommodations with custom fields. This is a feature that is essential the project I was experimenting with. It's still in early development so maybe it's something they will implement at a later stage.

Thanks for pointing me to that demo. I must say I got a bit stuck by just playing around without any further instruction. And thanks for your comments so far. Although this issue is in the first place to collect feed back, a short reaction from how I understand Rooms is working:

Bookable unit type is an entity type as is node (and taxonomy term and user). An instance of a bookable unit type is thus equivalent to what a content type is for node. You can add fields to a bookable unit type to descirbe the other properties of the accommodation (village, address, owner, pictures, pets allowed,...). A bookable unit is thus equivalent to created content in node wording and thus has an owner and access rights. However when viewing a bookable unit, the availability and pricing is not shown as currently this is only shown on the edit availability/pricing pages (which, IMO incorrectly, are admin/* URL's).

Integration with rooms seems further away and more difficult than originally hoped. So I had to continue with adding requested features to this module. Similarities increase by this, but are not making it easier to integrate.

We should still strive for integration, but that won't be on a short term. So postponing for now.

I think something like the "Click to Schedule by TimeTrade" is a good direction to Availability Calendars module

it would be awesome to have the two modules integrated and thus adding the "missing" features to rooms such as:
- option to give permissions to different users to manage only their rooms/units
- the half day booking for first/last day
- another option for the ui
- ...
i know it's been a while since the last post(s) but if anything changes i'm subscribed :)

Yes, it's been a while, but I have been thinking about it all the time. Almost all requests here (for A.C.) are about further integrating the reservation and payment process. So eventually this is the way to go, but finding time (or funding) will be the problem.

Looks like the rooms project is not going to be further developed (like this project). The future should now be either the bee module or the bat module (D7).

As an update path to D8, I'm thinking about a migration of data from this module to BEE, but so far there's nothing concrete, just thinking...
