I have colorbox working. I know this because whenever I look at an image content type node, there are 2 links that say thumbnail and original. When I click on them the appropriate image shows up in the colorbox. When I am looking at the gallery though with the rows of thumbnails, clicking on the thumbnail takes me to the node instead of popping up the image in colorbox. Is there a step I am missing? Thanks!

I have never used the image module myself but hopefulle some other users can help you.

I would recommend switching from the old image module to a more modern solution with cck, image fields, image cache and view. Colorbox has excellent support for this them and cck, image fields and image cache are all part of Drupal 7 core.
