Yes, you can
Absolutely. Open themes/xtemplate/xtemplate.theme, go to line 166 and change the | to whatever character you desire.
For reference, this would be themes/engines/xtemplate/xtemplate.engine on line 124 with Drupal 4.5.

i have $taxonomy variable in the theme but it renders it as <a>cars<a>
as i want to use this in html title i need pure text
there are some functions but they query the database
i need variables that i can put together to render Home: taxonomy info: page Title
