I am using this module with storm knowledge base to have technical articles, most of which will only be accessible by my staff but a few of which will be available to everyone. I find that even if I remove access by anonymous users, these articles still appear in the search results. I've cleared cache, run cron, rebuilt permissions... I still cannot get these tech articles to *not* appear in search results, it's like this module doesn't even work with search at all.

Any ideas?

I was able to solve this problem by switching to the content access module.

You are correct the module doesn't have hooks to integrate with the core search modules in Drupal. You decision was the right choice, use the content access module instead it is actively maintained.
