The feature discussed and implemented in #476798 should be folded into the current Drupal 7 version of the module. I've manually applied the patch (without modification to the code) and it seems to work for me. I've attached a patch file rolled against the master branch, but it just occurred to me that this may be the 3.x version? If so, I'll want to recreated it for the 2.x branch, since that is the recommended release at this point.

Generally we only keep one issue open at a time for the latest version, and then backport the patch to earlier versions. Please bump #476798: Including parent item in the menu to 7.x-2.x and upload your patch there.
