I'm wondering if when a default image is assigned to a cck image field, the thumbnail preview is supposed to, or able to show on the node creation form?

It shows once you save and edit, but it would be extremely helpful to display a preview of the default image on the node creation form as well.

I'm assuming that the default image preview does not display unless it has first been saved, but I wanted to verify.

Yes, the default image only displays on view, not on edit.

You may be able to theme the widget form to actually show the default image before you upload anything, but it's not the intended behavior to show the default before users upload anything.
