I would like my front page to have a short text and photo about my org at the top and news article (or teasers to articles) below. The news blurbs will change (like a blog) but the short text about my organization will always be at the top.
I realized I could accomplish this by (1) creating a story about by org, (2) setting it to appear on front page, (3) making it sticky so it appears at the top. Then any other news content I add will always be displayed below.
But I have two questions:
1. Is there a way to rename the /node in the URL to say /home or /welcome or whatever? As far as I can tell, that /node is a special page and it doesn't appear in the Content admin screen.
2. If I cannot rename /node, can I at least create another page to do that same thing? That is, can I create a new Page, rename it /home, and make other Pages, Stories, etc., appear there in the way I described above?

You can use the "mission"
You can use the "mission" setting to have a short text at the top, or what you can also do is create a new region for just that area. Look up 'phptemplate regions' it's a real breeze adding new regions to the existing "header, footer, sidebar etc...". Basically you can create a new block that goes into that region, and have your text/image in there.
When you say rename node, would using url aliases (pathautho module) work ?
or just
enable the 'path' module, which I think is included by default
if your site will just have a few pages, ie a business site, you won't need pathauto, just 'path' to manually rename urls to your liking.
correct. the path.module is
correct. the path.module is part of core and when enabled gives you a new menu item called url aliases, as well as a new menu when creating content. This lets you set the url manually.
the pathauto.module allows you to set paths up automagically and can be beneficial when you want content automagically aliased.
create url aliases
create url aliases as /node and new path /home . this work for me in admin/build/path/add

Path module
Enable the Path module. You can then set the path when you edit content.
