Is there a good guide to help beginners customize their drupal site...I mean beyond changing the theme and colors and such...I'm a relatively experienced web developer and have (I think) installed Drupal 5 cleanly...but I don't know where to start from turning my site into a list of chronological entries into something like...say, the Onion site...Obviously I don't want a guide to creating a full site like that, but just something to give me insight to how Drupal works. What I'm ultimately trying to make is a site that features photo, video, and audio, and I want a front page that separates these into sections, with a featured media item dominating the front.

I thought about getting a book, but I'm assuming none of the current ones cover Drupal 5.

I spend time to print all of the the handbook pages (http://drupal.org/handbooks). Even this handbook provide to much info for me as a beginner but soon I face advantage challenges from my customer then I can solve their problem, including separate the frontpage, multi site, multi language and so on. Also this site contain many usefull content from search box.

A book called Drupal Pro is due out in April I believe (cannot confirm it being for Drupal 5). There is also the IBM tutorials which are very very good.

GIYF too, Google is very good for finding information too. Nick Lewis's Blog has quite a few tutorials. AngryDonuts.com too. The video casts at dudertown and in the handbook are good. Lullabot provides some good articles on how to manipulate drupal. Planet Drupal also connects you to the many blogs out there that offer quite a few nuggets.
