it seems mimedetect rejects valid mp4-type audio files. part of this confusion is that AAC is a codec frequently found in files with the Mp4 or m4a file extension. I think this is what mimedetect gets unhappy about - but it seems to even reject aac-formatted audio with the .aac extension.
So i think it needs to accept file extensions mp4, aac and m4a for anything of mimetype (audio/aac). Perhaps this needs to be patched in core file.inc like the FLV case: #370958: FLV Flash Video Mimetypes
