In the block settings I have selected 'Show on every page except the listed pages' and have '' in text area below but block still shows.

Where am I going wrong?

I think you are probably trying to say you put <front> there and it's not working. Try putting 'node' and see what happens.

I just give you what I would put in:

<front>

That works for my blocks which I only want to see on the frontpage. So, have you tried it out vice versa, meaning try to set it to "Show on every page except the listed pages."

yes - I meant to say I tried "front" but no joy.

'node' does not work either.
