Under the community and support page there is a "member directory" tab (http://drupal.org/profile). What's the purpose of this page? As far as I can tell, it's fairly useless, as it just contains (at this moment) 39301 pages of d.o user listings.
I propose we do one of two things:
1. Make the page useful. Perhaps add the ability to search/filter as well as adding more profile information to the output.
2. Remove the tab
The current page just seems like a somewhat confusing/non-helpful page to present to less experienced users (those most likely to be in the community + support section of the site).

It seems like that could have a bit more prominence, similar to the "search documentation" block on the main community and support page.

mr.baileysSomewhat related (in that it makes the /profile pages even harder to use): #989786: Sort criteria used for /profile list is too volatile

lisarex CreditAttribution: lisarex commentedLet's assume we want to do #1: Make the page useful. Here's the initial issue (#886820: Member Directory needs basic search functionality) where we talk about the default sort (most recently active) and how this was just part of the MVP.
So... what profile fields seem good to filter members on? Here's what I'd like:
- username
- full name
- keyword (searches interests, bio, industries, companies etc)
- country

Things that seem worth considering adding to the output of that page:
-irc nick/twitter handle/linkedin profile/facebook page
-bio (perhaps trimmed with a link to the full profile)
Also, for what it's worth, I imagine the search already searches on most of the things you listed, it's just not very obvious.

greggles@beeradb - the search currently filters only on username (for people with "administer users" it filters on e-mail as well).

lisarex CreditAttribution: lisarex commentedI've postponed this until the D7 upgrade is done and (ideally) we have user profile pictures #957320: Enable the support for user profile pictures

mgiffordUpgrade's done so setting it back to active.
I agree that filters would be useful. Just exposing the taxonomy would help find folks with common interests.

apadernohttps://www.drupal.org/profile is enabled, but all I can see are pictures associated to user profiles, one per row. I cannot see anything to filter the list, nor can I understand the usefulness of such a list. I understand the list is sorted by recent activity, but I cannot understand to which users this list is necessary.

gisleIs https://www.drupal.org/profile linked to from anywhere on Drupal.org?
The issue summary says it is supposed to be a "member directory", but searching for that term take one to this page:
https://www.drupal.org/association/support/individual-members
As it is now, https://www.drupal.org/profile is useless. I am +1 for simply taking it down.

apadernoThe issue summary doesn't seem to describe the actual situation.
As it is, https://www.drupal.org/association/support/individual-members is more helpful, even if it lists just the individual members of the Drupal Association. I cannot say what the plans were (or are), but https://www.drupal.org/profile would be more helpful if it were similar to that page.
