Ways to place output of Slider

I just started looking at how I can use the Slider module. Not sure I'm going to explain this very well. I would like to use it as part of a page, along with other content and blocks. I would like to be able to use it as content to be placed in a sidebar or other non-content region. My first attempt seems to only be able to show the slider as a node in the content region. Are there other ways, such as modifying the slider slider.tpl.php file to be able to control where and how I can use the Slider display?

I can make a block using Views Slideshow, but the Slider module has the effect I want.

I'm a designer, new to theming and feeling overwhelmed with all of the parts Drupal has, so have mercy! Any help explained enough for someone not versed in PHP would be most appreciated!
