Publishing an image node to front page, seems to "require" assigning it to a gallery. One likely consequence of this, is that users will inadvertently multiple create galleries with null fields. This is bad.

dddave CreditAttribution: dddave commentedI don't understand this. NG_Images should never be created "directly" from the create content link. For them to work they naturally need a gallery assigned to them. So the workflow should be that you upload the image into a gallery. If such a pic is promoted to the frontpage no problem exists.
If you create the image directly you have to assign it to a gallery regardless if you promote it nor not.
Note: This is written from a NG3 perspective but as far as I remember NG2 did work basically the same.
