I'm trying to have a way that users can get an e-mail when someone adds a comment to a node that they have subscribed to via a check box or whatever. Is there a module available for this?

Check out the Subscriptions module. That will let people subscribe to notifications for comments on a node and unsubscribe if they don't want to follow it anymore.
