I'm using organic groups and I'd like for group creators to be able to choose public posts for discussion in a group. Is there a way to "point" to a public node from within a group so that everybody in that group can follow and discuss the post?

Why don't you just use the
Why don't you just use the blog feature and have members of the group blog about it the way they would do about external site. Otherwise, the only way to do that is to have edit permission and add the node to the group that way (it can be both public and in group) but one of the problems with that is that the author of the module has to be a member of the group.
