The Yahoo "Smush.IT" (which uses lossless methods that do not change visual quality) reports that it can cut ~21% of the size of images from the Corolla theme. For more information on the technology, see http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/

Updated.

I realized I made a mistake -- I had included some files from a contributed module.

When I ran this again with the correct set, the actual savings is closer to 46%, however this is done entirely by converting GIF images to PNG. I'm assuming some images are GIF for a reason -- so there very well may be no savings here.

AFAIR I was optimizing the images using pngnq utility. There are 18 pictures in the corolla/images directory with total size of 12.8 KB. I don't really see any benefits in further optimization.

There should be no gifs in the current revision of Corolla theme, I guess the gifs generated by SmushIt (awful name btw :P) come either from Drupal core or from third party modules.
