I realized I made a mistake -- I had included some files from a contributed module.
When I ran this again with the correct set, the actual savings is closer to 46%, however this is done entirely by converting GIF images to PNG. I'm assuming some images are GIF for a reason -- so there very well may be no savings here.

Jarek Foksa CreditAttribution: Jarek Foksa commentedAFAIR I was optimizing the images using pngnq utility. There are 18 pictures in the corolla/images directory with total size of 12.8 KB. I don't really see any benefits in further optimization.
There should be no gifs in the current revision of Corolla theme, I guess the gifs generated by SmushIt (awful name btw :P) come either from Drupal core or from third party modules.
