I am trying to restrict access to nodes by user roles (or preferrably CiviCRM smart groups, but that's going to take a lot of work) in Drupal 5. I know of several modules that provided this functionality for 4.6 and 4.7. One of them now seems to say that the ability to control node access by user role has been integrated into the core for Drupal 5. Does anyone know if this is true and how to use this functionality? Thanks!

I would also like to know how to control access to specific nodes based on user roles in Drupal 5.

It its simplest use I would like to grant anonymous users access to the homepage but no other pages in the site.

...or edit the text on the 'Access denied' page in some other fashion. I have tried using the locale.module for this but the 'Access denied' strings are not listed when using this module to manage strings.

Any advice/help would be most appreciated.
