Drupal 8 is currently in development and is not yet ready for production use. When version 8.0 is released, Drupal 6 will no longer be supported or receive security updates, and you are strongly advised to upgrade your Drupal 6 sites to Drupal 7 at that time.

Yup, we need to do this badly now that D7 is out. I am going to go make the changes now, and then someone can review them after the fact. It should be pretty straightforward.

Here are the changes I made: http://drupal.org/node/27362/revisions/view/1287162/1301606

It was mostly straightforward, except for a couple things. I removed the link to the contributed modules status list (http://groups.drupal.org/node/5036) for now, since I couldn't find an equivalent page for Drupal 7 yet. I also had to reword some of the instructions for finding your current Drupal version number via the admin screens, since the breadcrumb paths have changed a lot in Drupal 7.

I suspect some of the links to translation versions at http://drupal.org/project/Translations are a bit out of date now that localize.drupal.org exists, and we should probably add a link to http://drupal.org/project/installation+profiles instead of (or in addition to) that. But I haven't made any changes for those now - they are less important than removing the out-of-date references to Drupal 5.

David_Rothstein, nice job.
I think we should put this to needs work for the last part of your comment.

Whoops reviewed the page again:

Next section needs work:
"How do I know which version of Drupal I'm running?"

I've updated link to translations and added link to installation profiles as mentioned in #3.

I'm unsure about this one:

If previous patterns continue, a stable version (Drupal 8.0) will likely be released sometime in 2012.

7.0: January 2011
6.0: February 2008
5.0: January 2007
So, 6.0 took one year, 7.0 took three years. We're safer in predicting 8.0 "sometime in 2012-2013".

I guess saying "2012 or 2013" might be a bit safer. I used 2012 based on the theory that people will likely push for something more like an 18 month release cycle this time around. I've certainly heard people talk about that, but that may be wishful thinking :)

I'm fine with someone changing it to "2012 or 2013" instead if they want to.

Other than that, is there anything else we need to do in this issue?

Well, apparently my guess of 2012 was a little off :) Now 2014 is looking more and more likely...

So this page probably needs some updates for a few things: Drupal 8 is no longer in the "early stages of development", the estimate on the page of an August 2013 release date for Drupal 8 is likely optimistic, and recommending that anyone still consider choosing Drupal 6 for a new site at this point is probably not too wise.

And in general, each time a new core release comes out and evolves, similar updates to this page need to occur, so maybe this issue should remain perpetually open?

Changing the issue title for that purpose, and unassigning myself since I'm not committing to keep this page updated in perpetuity myself :)

I've removed the reference to a Drupal 8 release date and updated some of the information to be a little more current. It will still need to be updated when D8 is released.

Thanks, that update looks good to me!
